Marathonissi (Gr. Μαραθωνήσι) is a small, uninhabited island in the Gulf of Laganas with a circumference of approximately 1km and a maximum height of 145m. The island is a nesting area for the Caretta caretta turtles and an important ecosystem in terms of its flora and fauna. Neverthelss, during the summer season, the Gulf of Laganas as well as the island of Marathonissi, are invaded by thousands of tourists, the majority of which are unaware of the ecosystem’s value and vulnerability.
The mapping research analysis is bi-scalar focusing on the coastlines of Marathonissi and of the Gulf of Laganas. The different typologies of coastal sections encountered were recorded and analysed within an annual framework.
The primary aim of the research was to comprehend and assess the existing situation but also to project future possibilities, combining active ecological preservation and sustainable tourism development.
