The two springs named after the mythological Anigrides and Atlantides nymphs, are renowned since antiquity and mentioned in Strabo’s and Pausanias’ writings. The springs’ tourism infrastructure -the hydrotherapy centre, two hotels and their amenities- operate since 1907 following the connection to the Peloponnese railway network. Due to its significant ecological characteristics, the area is listed in the Natura 2000 Network and is under the protection of the Ramsar International Convention. The research began with a tri-scalar mapping investigation of the area and the recording of the area’s morphological layering: the beach, the forest, the lake, the islet. The area’s ecological value and inclusion in the Natura 2000 network, contradicts with the linear illegal housing development that spreads along the coast. The structures, for primarily holiday use, were built in the last three decades. In their majority, they are self-built in stages on public land without any compliance to planning provisions. The characteristics of the informal settlement include the lack of any cohesive street plan and public infrastructure, fenced-in enclosures, subsequent annexes. The hinterland of the informal coastal development is public land that emerged following the draining of Lake Mouria in 1969. The draining failed to create agricultural land suitable for crops’ cultivation. At present, the grounds are solely used for illegal grazing. Through thorough mapping, critical issues were unveiled while the ecological, cultural and economic potentials of a reinstated wetland were defined. 21:38:50 +0000 Coastal Ionian https://coastalionian.cargo.site/N-37-38-42-E-21-19-10 Katakolon, Elis, GR Maria Kalaitzaki, Theodora Serdari Katakolon, located on the tip of the Gulf of Kyparissia, has been an important harbour since antiquity. In the second half of the 18th century Katakolon became the main gateway for the export of raisin to Europe and in 1882, got connected to the railway network. Today, the small town of Katakolon with a permanent population of 600 inhabitants, despite its inefficient infrastructure, is a popular stopover for cruise ships, receiving over 9.000 tourists daily during high season. The conducted mapping research proves that Katakolon constitutes an informal infrastructural node accommodating primarily access to Ancient Olympia. Besides the conflicting use of the harbour, the area is listed in the Natura 2000 network due to the presence of important species under protection. With a total coastline length of 867.932 km, it includes the Ionian Islands of Corfu, Paxos, Lefkas, Ithaca, Cephalonia, Zante and Kythera. The design research began with a mapping investigation of the historical and cultural evolution of the region through etchings, nautical and historical maps. With the use of critically distilled GIS material, the land topography and bathymetry of the area as well as its geographical and morphological characteristics were identified, recorded and assessed. Similarly, the infrastructural networks including sea, land and air connections. Moreover, the mapping of densities of settlements (formal and informal), archaeological sites, tourism infrastructures, textures and qualities of the Ionian coastline provided useful and quantifiable data, leading to the focus of the overall investigation: the Natura 2000 network. The Ionian sites listed under the Natura 2000 directory were in turn mapped and analysed, not only in terms of their ecological importance and morphological aspects but also in terms of their potential connectivity in a new intra-regional network. residents, is a popular mass tourism destination, located in the southern part of the island of Zante, 4 km away from the island's airport and 6 km away from Zakynthos town. The not-long-ago fishermen’s’ village, Laganas has gradually become a party destination for ‘18 to 30’ visitors offering over 20.000 beds in mostly mid to low range hotel accommodation. Within the coastal and marina area of Laganas and Laganas Bay, the presence of important migrant avifauna and endemic flora, as well as habitats like sand dunes and halophile vegetation systems and meadows of the sea grass, the endangered monk seal Monachus Monachus and most importantly the nesting areas of the Loggerhead sea turtle Caretta caretta, determined the establishment of the National Marine Park of Zakynthos in 1999. The objective of the Park is the protection and conservation of animal and plants’ species as well as their habitats, which constitute an important natural heritage at national and international level. The area is also included in the Natura 2000 network. The bibliographic research and mapping analysis conducted, proves that the area of ZNMP is an ecosystem of the highest environmental value, threatened by anthropogenic pressures mainly related to the overexploitation of the park’s resources, illegal tourism development, conflicting uses, inefficient legal framework and policy implementation. Μαραθωνήσι) is a small, uninhabited island in the Gulf of Laganas with a circumference of approximately 1km and a maximum height of 145m. The island is a nesting area for the Caretta caretta turtles and an important ecosystem in terms of its flora and fauna. Neverthelss, during the summer season, the Gulf of Laganas as well as the island of Marathonissi, are invaded by thousands of tourists, the majority of which are unaware of the ecosystem’s value and vulnerability. The mapping research analysis is bi-scalar focusing on the coastlines of Marathonissi and of the Gulf of Laganas. The different typologies of coastal sections encountered were recorded and analysed within an annual framework. The primary aim of the research was to comprehend and assess the existing situation but also to project future possibilities, combining active ecological preservation and sustainable tourism development. Αχελώος) river delta. It constitutes a dynamic and important ecosystem of the Messolonghi Lagoon and National Park, listed in the NATURA 2000 network and protected by the Ramsar Convention. The landscape of Dioni is the product of 10.000 years of alluvial sedimentations of the river and is defined by fluvial and marine processes. The equilibrium of the dynamic system changed dramatically in the last four decades. Following the construction of dams and land drainage, the river’s fluvial supply and deposits gradually decreased. Thus nowadays the marine processes (wave and current action) in combination with seasonal temperature and weather conditions, predominate the Delta. In the last few years, human presence and interventions continuously increased with the construction of illegal houses, alongside conflicting uses such as illegal fishing and livestock grazing and leisure activities including kite, wind-surfing and even camping on the dunes. Dioni is a sensitive ecosystem currently under severe threat due to anthropogenic interventions and the lack or inefficiency of legal and planning provisions. https://coastalionian.cargo.site/N-38-28-45-E-21-06-08 Platiyali, Aetolia &amp; Acarnania, GR Prokopis Maragkakis Platiyali is a commercial and transit port built in a natural cove within the bay of Astakos, Aetolia. The infrastructure was built in the early 1980’s, funded by ETBA (Hellenic Bank for Industrial Development) and EU funds with the intention to develop the Platygiali Naval Industrial Zone with primarily ship dismantling facilities. The investment soon proved unprofitable and by 1990 ETBA attempted to sell off the facilities. Reactions from the local community against the intention to construct a toxic waste combustion plant, prevented twice, in 1990 and 1992, the sale of the port to Swiss corporations. Almost a decade later Platiyali was eventually sold to ‘Astakos-Terminal’ and transformed into a commercial and transit port. Today the port operates under the supervision of the Greek Company ‘Akarport’. They differ not only in terms of geomorphological characteristics but also in their territorially strategic role throughout history. More specifically, Pantokrator features a network of Ottoman fortifications that once safeguarded Amvrakikos Gulf and the region of Epirus, while the military base of the Hellenic Air Force in Aktion, with the NATO Forward Operations’ Base, is at present an important nexus, far beyond the confines of Greece. The design research focuses upon the juxtaposition and confluence between (defense) infrastructures, agricultural production, cultural heritage and leisure.
